It was past midnight. The stars were shinning bright and Emi had ran out of the house, again. This was the third night in a row that her folks had argued over something stupid, again. Ever since the day she had been born, it seemed like her parents had fought at least three times a week over something she did. The main arguement was boxing. Her mother wanted the little girl to be like her and travel the world, be a model or a designer; or both like she had been. Her father honestly wanted her to do what she wanted to; boxing just had fit that quota. The red-headed girl walked around the town with her hands in her pockets and her ear buds in her ears. She walked to the beat of each song that came on, not being too fast or too slow. She had created this playlist ever since she'd gotten the iPhone for Christmas. She had commendeered some music from different friends over the years, so she had a numerous amount that she could put on it; meaning, she jailbroke the dumb thing and basically does whatever she wants on it.
The song that had been playing was one of her top bands, Mayday Parade, the song: Terrible Things. She thought about changing it, but no one was around and it was dark enough that no one would see her face. She readjusted her hat when she figured out where she wanted to go; the pier. It had been her main place for everything, thinking and whatnot. It didn't take her long from where her house was, so she didn't have to spend too much energy walking over to it seeing as though the girl was small and tired. Once she got to the pier, she sat on it and just looked out to the ocean and started to sing along with the song. "Girl, can I tell you a wonderful thing. I made you a present of paper and string. Open with care now, I'm asking you please. You know that I love you will you marry me?" Music was the only way to know the girl's feelings. She was awful at explaining how she felt to other people, so whenever someone asked, she just played a song.
She stopped singing, as her voice got shaky and water started running down her eyes. The song was so beautiful, but so sad at the same time. She wished that her parents wouldn't fight at all and that life could be so much simpler than what it was know. She was about to be a junior at this academy and there was whisper of a war between werewolves and shifters. She was scared that she might end up getting hurt in all of this; or worse, someone she cared about. Then again, she didn't have many friends at the academy because no one really stuck around after their first encounter with her. She was a hyper ball of energy that no one seemed to be able to handle. Her best friend was the only one she really cared about. Everyone else was just there. It was easy for her to meet people because she talked a hell of a lot; but she rambled on for a good long while.
Emi sighed as the song ended and the next song came on. She looked down at the iPhone looking at the time: 1:13. She had a text from one of her three brothers asking where she'd run off to. She quickly responded and curled up in a ball. She tucked her legs tight against her chest and wrapped her small arms around them. The next song was You Make Me Feel from Cobra Starship. She bobbed her head back and forth to the beat and her mood was rearranged quickly. She got up and started to dance around because no one was usually up at this time of night. She stopped when her brother had texted her back again saying don't stay out to late and he would text her when their parents were cooled off. She texted back saying love you and put the phone back in her pocket. She finally just stood there and looked back up at the stars. She was suddenly frightened by some shadow and turned around. "Hellllo? Who's there?"

• • Max couldn't take the four walls of a hotel room anymore. It was driving him crazy and it didn't help that his father had turned the place into a miniature technological hub. Various laptops were going at the same time and there was always one phone ringing. Escaping to the pier was the best place, as he had discovered a few nights ago when he had first went there. Usually around this time, midnight, or witching hour as he called it, there was no one, even the junkies and alcoholics had disappeared. Now was the time for the vampires, werewolves and shifters. Max was the very last one, his animal being a fox.
Standing on the edge the pier, he had his earphones in, the music blocking out the whole world from his. With the iPod on shuffle he got a taste of everything. From Coldplay to 100 Monkeys, Max listened to soul and rock to classical. He needed music to survive, just as he needed a canvas to expresses himself. Max stared out at the endless ocean, the darkness consuming his figure. He didn't care about anything at that moment in time. There were hardly people around, none that could pose a threat to him, and his senses usually sharpened in the dark.
After some time on the pier, Max decided it was time to head back to the hotel, his inner calmness restored fully. Picking up the back pack he had brought with, he put away his iPod and was about to sling it across his shoulder when a voice called out in the dark. He had been so absorbed that he hadn't even heard someone arrive. Or felt it for that matter. Max startled at the sound, lost his balance on the edge of the pier and with a yell fell into the water. He was lucky that he controlled his transformations, because if he turned into a fox... well he would be screwed. Getting out of the water he sat looking like a drowned rat trying to find the source of his fall.

The red-head let the whole shadow thing go and went back to her music. If anyone tried to sneak up on her, she'd be sneaky and turn into her fox form and run away. She's had to do it plenty of times before, seeing as well, she likes night more than day. She put back in the headphone that had got pulled out of her ear when she jerked around and laid down on the pier. She put her hands under her head for support and just looked up at the stars. She spotted the constellations and smiled. She didn't know why stars were so relaxing to her. Maybe because she was afraid of the water? Possibly. It was that whole association thing in psychology that she'd learned last year.
She was startled by the sound of a splash and popped her head up seeing the water start to settle down. She sat up and wondered who else would be out here at night. It was basically almost two in the morning. She saw a figure get out of the water. Before she changed, she noticed a guy that seemed familiar. Did he go to the academy with her? She stood up, just in case and took out her headphones. The small girl took a few steps closer to him, "You okay?" She thought she would be polite and at least asked before he tried anything. And if he did, she'd just punch him in his chest and judo kick his ass back in the water. MMA stuff came in handy all the time in situations like this. No one ever suspected a petite, young girl to be so powerful.
Her phone went off again. "'Scuse me for a moment," she told the random guy that had just gotten out of the water. It was her older brother again. He said to just find a different place to stay tonight, but not to stay out on the streets. She let out a long sigh. Great. How was she supposed to find another place to stay? Her best friend was out of town, along with the keys to his place, and she didn't have any other friends. She would stay with one of her brothers, but they don't live around here and come visit during summers to keep her sane with her living with her parents. Her tiny legs were about to walk off, but she remembered, she was talking to someone. She turned back around and looked him over. Taller than her, but so was everyone else. Shaggy, blond/brown hair. She thought she saw blue in his eyes, but that was about it. And wet of course. "You should watch your step when around here. It's an easy place to fall into the water by accident."

• • Max shivered slightly from the wind that had joined in accosting his senses after he had gotten out from water. It seemed that he might not be able to stop the phase, slight waves of anger waving rolling over him. If he changed now, then all hell was going to break loose. Even in his small form as a fox, he still had a feeling that he could do some damage. Not for the first time he wondered if there was a rabies vaccine for foxes. Breathing deeply, he tried to calm down. He blamed his anger on fatigue, and thus, not his usual self. At the sound of the voice, he flinched moving away from it, further into the darkness. His hair had already seemed to take on a reddish tinge and feeling his ears, found them to be slightly pointier than usual.
Max didn't answer the question, preferring to hide and if he had to undergo a full change, do it away from whatever humans there was. Breathing deeply, he tried to stop the change, the already familiar tingle in his spine, like a soft tickle, soothing and not even painful. It seemed that girl would leave him alone, her footsteps becoming fainter and he sighed. He wouldn't want to get to know one more person. Rory was enough for that. His sister had been quite surprised when he had come and exclaimed he had made a friend. Now, he didn't want any more friends. Too many became a hassle at times, and then there were even more problems to deal with. Slowly, he felt himself go back into his normal human phase. Then the footsteps became louder again, and Max sighed once more. Ridding himself of the shirt, he watched as a red head came into view.
He was new in town and he still had to attend the academy, so the faint flash of recognition on the girls face confused him. Max heard her comment and he laughed harshly. No thanks to you he thought, but said nothing aloud. He just watched her, analysing her. Her scent was different, also fox like, and if he was surprised then he didn't show it. Max took a step back, this time making sure it was away from the water, his expression neutral.

She saw the guy shiver from the cold that had just been brought upon from the wind. She wrapped her arms around herself because she felt the wind through the small jacket she had on. He also looked worried, like something was about to happen. Her keen fox sense was telling her that he was also a shifter. What he shifted into was another question on its own. She wouldn’t bother him about it unless he brought it up, but this guy didn’t seem like one to talk much.
The guy didn’t answer her question, but just stood there and looked like he was hurting. After a while of him just standing there, looking dazed, he laughed at her comment. She wasn’t sure what he was laughing at, but she wanted to know, ”And what sir, do you think is so funny?” She crossed her arms and leaned to the left side of her body. He probably wouldn’t tell her but she was used to that. She was rarely in the loop with anything in this dumb town, even with how small it was. He took a step back away from her. Emi’s face scrunched up and then went back to normal, ”Do you have a problem with me? I don’t remember actually meeting you. Just seeing you around the town. You’re new though, aren’t you? And a shifter.”
Her phone went off again. She sighed and looked at it. Great. Her parents knew that she had gone missing and had gotten a text from both of them. Her father saying to come to a hotel room he rented and her mother telling her to come home now. She rolled her green eyes as far back as she could and turned her phone on silent now. This guy interested her. Even if he didn’t seem that way back, she would still have a conversation, or try to, with him.

• • Max could feel the fatigue ebbing away his energy that he tried so hard to preserve. He didn't want to see anything about this girl, and because of the wind he was afraid that he might just get a whiff of something that could send off something. As her phone went off, Max thought out the answers that he would have to give her. She seemed like the persistent type, and he wasn't prepared to say anything more than necessary. He didn't know what all the texts were about, but from what he could gouge it seemed like something intense and obviously none of his business. Nothing's funny, he said, his Germanic and British accent coming through his vocals, clearing the clear with sound instead.
The reason I moved away was because I didn't want to know your whole past and future, he carried, knowing that the girl was a shifter, because she spoke so nonchalantly of him being one. This time in the morning there wasn't the fear of being overheard. The council would know if someone figured out that the town was only appearance for what lay underneath. Vampires, Shifters and Werewolves, all on the brink of war was the most important secret to keep. The people could never find out. It was important to think along the lines of nuclear war breaking out type thing, when keeping a secret of what you really were. Max returned from his thoughts, breathing the air deeply. Where the wind had been blowing against him, it had turned and was now blowing towards him. He caught a full face of the girl's scent, and blanked out.
Birth. Pain. Emi Kaisar Murin. Happiness. -scene change- Voices shouting. Shifters and children listening. Watching. Boxing gloves. Italy. -scene change- Fashion shows. More fighting. Older children. -scene change- Watching. Protection. Running. Laughter. Fire. Burning skin. Pain. A lot of pain. Burning hair. Max gasped as he came out of the random images and found himself bent double on one knee. Scent visions never came to him often, and when they did, they were vivid enough for him to freak out completely. Thankfully he hadn't seen the girls future, because that was even worse. He usually didn't tell people their future's. It made life complicated and he was all about the simple.
Still in his haze, he started talking. Talking more than usual. Your name is Emi Kaisar Murin. You were born in Italy. Your father is a boxer and your mother a fashion designer. They don't get along. You shift into a fox. A few years ago you were playing with your siblings and fell into a fire. You lost feeling in the left side of your body. You still have the scars. Max stopped suddenly, realising what he was busy doing. He had taught himself to keep quiet when he saw things, but he seemed to have lost control around the red head. With fear in his eyes, he grabbed his bag and fled, his feet thudding rhythmically against the dock.
Last time he had told someone their scarred past it had ended up in his ribs being broken and a death threat. It was one of the reasons he moved to New Castle. From what he saw of the girl, she was pretty fierce to.

This boy intrested her. He was, different. He didn't seem that he was really social in anyway shape or form, but she didn't exactly care. To her response, he said that nothing was funny and she left it at that. She didn't want to make the boy angrier than he probably already was from her interrupting her. He also started saying something about moving away. That he didn't want to know her whole past and future. Emi cocked her head to the left and wondered what he meant. Could he see into people's lives? She could control fire, but she didn't know other people's powers could be so...intense. "Well, alrighty then." She was probably going to just leave him alone after that, but his face sort of went blank. She kind of got closer to him, very slowly. She didn't want him to swing at her or anything.
The boy's phase thing lasted for quite a while it seemed. He suddenly popped up and started shouting out random facts about her life including her name and her parents arguing. And the incident. The only reason she had regained feeling in her body was the fact that she could control fire. If she didn't have that power, she probably wouldn't be outside or talking to people at all. Probably laying down on a bed in a hospital in Italy right now. She swallowed the spit that had gathered in her mouth and watched the male grab his bag after quickly stopping himself from saying anything more. She wasn't sure how she felt about all this right now. This whole expierence was something that she didn't want to expierence at all. She didn't tell people her past for reasons well kept and this person had just smelled her and started spitting them out for anyone to hear.
She didn't even notice anything after that point. She fell to the dock and sat there with her legs curled up to her chest. That was one way to get the red head to shut her mouth and not talk; asking about her past. She glanced at the guy once more and noticed a bit of fear in his eyes. He probably saw all the boxing training she had from her father and older brothers. "I'm not going to hurt you. Just so you know. I don't hurt people unless they try to hurt me first outside of the ring." She figured she would give that disclaimer before she would, or could, say anything else.
She sat there, on the wooden dock, looking out into the ocean, thinking about everything. It was funny, she thought, how the water could be so calming, yet she had almost drowned in it and was deathly afraid of it. She didn't exactly mind so much, but still. It was scary for her. She thought about her family at the moment and what they could be doing. Her brother told her not to come home because their parents wouldn't cool down. Her parents texted her saying to come back home. She didn't want to. She wanted to run away and never come back. A tear ran down her face and she quickly wiped it away. She didn't want to give this guy any reason to make fun of her of anything. Not that he probably would after seeing her training from her father.

• • Max skidded to a halt, and he took a few moments to collect his thoughts. He owed Emi an explanation, and that was the worst part for him. Talking. He seemed to have done a lot of damage, but now was the time to face up to it. Walking back to the girl, he noticed how broken she looked. She addressed him, and he nodded. He knew that too. Taking a seat next to her, he chewed on his bottom lip with the thoughts mulling about in his head. I'm sorry. I have premonitions, but I also can't really control them. For some reason I saw your past tonight, but I'm not going to say anything to anyone. It's your story to tell, not mine, he said quietly, his Germanic accent full of remorse for his actions that he didn't mean to happen.
He stared out at the ocean, wondering why he had come back. It was his own fault for being out so late, but he enjoyed the freedom of having his full senses at night. There was something about the dark that made life more interesting. Between the two of them, there was quiet, how much of it was peaceful, he didn't know. Max glanced at Emi, noticing her wipe away a tear. Oh great. The socially awkward had made someone cry. Now that was something to write about. I really am sorry. My name is Max Carter. I am indeed a shifter, a fox. I'm currently living in a hotel in town waiting for the term to start, he said, thinking it only fair that she knew who he was when he knew who she was.
Stretching out his legs, Max leaned back on his elbows. It was the fastest he had every relaxed around someone, but he also knew that the figure next to him was quite capable of defending herself. Maybe the town was changing him for better. He hoped so, because he was tired of fearing people for what they appeared to be.

Emi heard him say that he was sorry and that he couldn’t control it really. And he wasn’t going to tell anyone, which made her feel better, ”Um. Thanks.” She felt awkward now. She was usually the happy-go-lucky kid of the town. But usually just mentioning just one thing didn’t bother her, but having everything just in her face like that, well, that was just wrong. She also noticed his German accent when he spoke. Wasn’t expecting that. It just made him all the more interesting to her though.
It was quiet for a while until he spoke yet again, he started to introduce himself. When he did, she could tell that he was kind of awkward about it, probably because he’s not really had to do it before. Max Carter was his name and he was currently living in a hotel, waiting for the school year to start. Plus he was a fox shifter. She knew it. ”Nice to meet you,” she mentioned.
She looked at her phone one last time since she hadn’t looked at it for a while. Forty-five unread messages. Most from her father and brothers. Only one was from her mother. She rolled her eyes and just put her phone up. She looked back at the boy named Max and thought about asking him for a big favor with his apartment. But, she knew that wouldn’t happen and he would probably leave. She would probably just sneak into the park and sleep in a slide with a roof with it. It didn’t bother her much though because she’s done it seven times before now.

• • Max saw very little good in the people's futures that he read. Those that were the bullies, the gang bangers, the junkies, those were the ones that saddened him. It made a vile taste fill in his mouth as he saw them, and he tried to forget it very quickly. He hadn't seen Emi's future tonight, just her past and what had happened. After all the last hour was already the past. He also saw where she had been sleeping when escaping from her situations at home. Being raised with manners, he couldn't allow it to happen again. Socially awkward was what he was, but he wasn't cruel. Never cruel.
My dad wouldn't mind if you spent the night. Besides, it's safer than being in the park, he said, offering a place in the hotel room that had more than space for one more. His father and sister were also shifter's, so they knew about the secret world that New Castle really was. Where as he was a fox, his father turned into a jaguar and his sister, a panther. It was the one way people recognised that he was adopted, but if he didn't mention it, then it usually went by unnoticed.
We should probably get going, he said softly, knowing that without enough sleep he was a complete grouch. Either he would wake up in a few hours or carry on sleeping until past lunch time.

She was about to get up and walk away, when Max said that his dad wouldn’t mind if she spent the night. And it was safer from the park. Her head jolted to the side and then she remembered: he saw everything, including her sleeping at the park to escape her family. ”Are you sure? I don’t want to be a bother to you or your family.” She had just met this kid, and he had just offered her a place to stay for the night, only knowing her from what he saw. She felt flattered from his offer, but not sure if she could take it. It’s not that she wasn’t afraid of what she might get herself into, but she had slept at the park before and been okay. It was probably more dangerous for her to be there at night when she was younger, but oh well.
He then said that they should probably get going. She stood up and put her hands in her coat pocket. ”Well, I have to thank you so much for this. I’m not sure how to repay you for this.” She wondered if she could like, do their dishes or something for them for this. She didn’t exactly have many friends, so she never really went anywhere when her brothers told her to skedaddle when their parents fought. Kaisar was the type of person that couldn’t take charity at all. She needed to repay the person back.

Max would later blame his actions on being sleep deprived and in an extremely odd mood. This was the one thing that happened that he could not explain later to someone. Not even his 'sister' who had come to know him better than anyone else, but with a few key things left out. He was glad that knew that he was adopted, but Emi was going to be one of the first that might actually find out outside of the family. This was the strange thing, and he just grinned at her question. Dad is trying to seal a deal with some Australian shifters and my sister finds the night life boring, he answered her with a wry grin. He walked back to the hotel slowly, mulling over life in general.
No payment necessary, he said, throwing a grin over his shoulder. So he didn't exactly exude gay, and not even Rory had realised that he was batting for the team until he had said so. This town was changing him, he could feel it and it was good change. But if you really feel the need to, then we'll figure something out later, he added on, more of an after thought than anything else.
